U.S. Releases Harpoon Rounds to Taiwan

The U.S. Department of Defense has announced an $89.7 million Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract for 60 tactical Harpoon Air Launched All-Up-Rounds for Taiwan.

The missiles are expected to be outfitted on 12 P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft released to Taiwan in 2007. The contract was awarded to Boeing on Aug. 25 by the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command.

The Harpoon release is considered a positive development after the Bush administration froze U.S. arms deals with Taipei until after the Olympic Games in Beijing. There have been fears the United States would maintain the hold until after Bush
