President Sarkozy ditches Franco-British carrier project

A Franco-British plan to build three aircraft carriers has been scrapped after President Sarkozy deferred the project amid doubts over London's design.

The prospect of cross-channel co-operation on the project failed after Mr Sarkozy refused the give the go-ahead for a second French carrier alongside the nuclear-powered Charles-de-Gaulle carrier.

His announcement came after the British Government approved a £3.9billion project for two new Royal Navy carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.
