Ottawa outlines its defence strategy online

The government is procuring 17 new C-130J Hercules tactical lift aircraftA month after being criticized for announcing its plans for the future of the military without putting anything on paper, the federal Conservative government has posted its Canada Defence Strategy online.

The government says the strategy will produce a first-class, modern military that is well-trained, well-equipped and ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century. It calls for a modern military with clearly defined missions and capabilities.

Specifically, the plan says Canada's defence forces will have six core missions:
  • Conducting daily domestic and continental operations, including in the Arctic and through NORAD;
  • Supporting a major international event in Canada, such as the 2010 Olympics;
  • Responding to any major terrorist attacks;
  • Supporting civilian authorities in crises such as natural disasters;
  • Conducting a major international operation for an extended period;
  • Deploying forces in response to crises elsewhere in the world for shorter periods.
