New patrol boat to protect subs in Sound

Coast Guard cutter is first vessel assigned to provide security for Navy

When Lt. j.g. Alanna Kaltsas and her crew first brought their new 87-foot Coast Guard cutter, Sea Devil, to its new home at the Navy's submarine base in Bangor in April, sailors there were puzzled.

"It was interesting when we arrived. They asked, 'Are you lost?' " Kaltsas recalls with amusement.

"We said, 'No, we will be working with you,' " said Kaltsas, 26, a 2005 U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduate from Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.

On Friday, after the Sea Devil is formally commissioned at Naval Base Kitsap at Keyport, Kaltsas will become its first commanding officer and, with her crew of 15, begin a new and significant mission with the Navy.
