The fight over U.S. plans to permanently base a nuclear aircraft carrier in Japan is not over.A Japanese judge two weeks ago tossed out a challenge filed by 248 people demanding a halt to harbor work they say is spreading pollution and damaging livelihoods by killing fish. They also fear a radiation leak. Today they filed an appeal with the Tokyo High Court.
The U.S. George Washington is to be berthed in Yokosuka (yoh-koos-kuh), Japan, starting in August. It will be the first nuclear-powered vessel to be based in Japan.
