Anger as tanker contracts go abroad

Trade union leaders in Plymouth have expressed their disappointment after the Government announced plans to build a fleet of naval tankers abroad.

Yesterday Baroness Taylor, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, said the four companies which would construct the new MARS (Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability) Fleet Tankers would be either Italian, Korean or Spanish.

The Ministry of Defence said none of the bidders had indicated they would build the tankers in the UK, reflecting the fact that UK capacity was taken up by the Type 45 air defence destroyer and the Future Aircraft Carrier.
