Upgrades could slow ship building

A government report highlights ongoing developmental problems with new technologies for aircraft carriers.

A new electromagnetic launch system planned for the Navy's next generation of aircraft carriers is 15 months behind schedule, threatening to hold back the construction schedule of the Gerald R. Ford, according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office.

The report raises several questions about new technologies planned for the carriers, including the launching system used to catapult aircraft off the flight deck, advanced arresting gear that catch landing planes and the new dual-band radar system.
