NZ Frigates idle as navy struggles to retain staff

New Zealand's navy frigates are barely being used, due to serious problems with retaining trained navy personnel, the National Party claims.

Figures requested in Parliament show that one frigate, Te Kaha, only spent 79 days at sea last year and is likely to spend one day in four at sea in 2008.

Te Kaha was placed on reduced operation status for the first quarter of this year, meaning it was unable to go to sea due to the need to train personnel.
