Jet that ruled night flies into military history

The last of the F-117 fighters made a final stop in Palmdale on Tuesday before jetting off into history as the world's first attack aircraft to employ stealth technology.

Four of the ink-black, angular jets served as a backdrop at a ceremony hosted by Lockheed Martin, whose fabled Skunk Works unit created the radar-evading aircraft.

"I read it's the most recognized aircraft on the face of the Earth," said Andy McElhaney, a 12-year Lockheed worker and Llano resident. "Just to see it, to come in the hangar in the morning (without) the lights on, it was the most awesome thing to look at."
