VMFA-242 gets new home in Japan

The last F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets belonging to Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 left Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Thursday for the trek across the Pacific Ocean to their new permanent home in Japan.

The “Bats” of VMFA-242 are shifting their permanent duty station to MCAS Iwakuni, marking the Corps’ first two-seat Hornet squadron to be based permanently in Japan.

Officials said the shift is the latest move under the Marine Corps’ aviation plan that covers squadron relocations and transitions to new aircraft, including the Joint Strike Fighter.
