Australian Defence Force submarine crews depleted

A recruitment crisis in the Australian Defence Force has led to a shortage of qualified submariners, with the navy able to properly crew only three of its six submarines.

The nation's mining boom and the demanding life of submariners have made it difficult to recruit or retain crews, leading to a 37 per cent shortfall in sailors.

Salaries of higher than $80,000 have failed to lure new recruits, News Limited newspapers reported.
