US Navy pushes ahead with Fire Scout development

The US Navy (USN) has taken the decision to decouple the MQ-8B Fire Scout UAV programme from the Littoral Combat Ship project in order to get the capability out to warfighters as quickly as possible according to NAVAIR’s VTUAV program manager Captain Tim Dunigan.

The navy is now pushing for a 2009 initial operating capability with the UAV with a full IOC in Fiscal Year 2010.

In order to take things forward Northrop Grumman and NAVAIR will be deploying Fire Scout aboard another ‘air-capable’ navy ship later this year.

‘We don’t know what vessel it will be, but the decision is imminent,’ said Douglas Fronius, program director VTUAV Fire Scout at Northrop.
