Out-of-control satellite destroyed over Pacific

A specially-armed US Navy warship has shot down an out-of-control spy satellite that was threatening to crash back to Earth.

The USS Lake Erie launched a single rocket, originally designed to intercept ballistic missiles, from the Pacific to destroy the satellite, known as L21.

The US Defence Department confirmed that the interception had been successful, with the missile striking the satellite 133 nautical miles above the ground at 10:26pm Eastern Standard Time (3:26am GMT) last night.
