India will have its own nuclear submarines by 2009: Navy Chief

India will have its own nuclear submarines by 2009, Navy Chief admiral Sureesh Mehta said on Monday bringing out of closet the ambitious project.

India is also acquiring a Russian SSBN Akula-class nuclear submarine on lease.

The submarine will be used for training Indian personnel in handling reactors before they get their own under water vessel.

The acquition of nuclear submarine is part of India's plan to build a minium nuclear deterrant.
