Defence Minister Phil Goff says the navy is doing all it can to ensure it has enough specialist staff to keep ships at sea.

A looming shortage of marine technicians has raised concerns the navy will have to keep ships in port.

Mr Goff says seven ships are due to come into service - the biggest increase in the navy's history.

He says specialists are being offered a bonus of $45,000 after three years' service in an effort to keep them in the navy.
