A vote of the full U.S. Senate supported an increase in production of Virginia-class submarines for the first time Monday.The Senate passed the $648.8 billion fiscal 2008 Defense Authorization Bill by a vote of 92 to 3, including $470 million for the advanced procurement of submarine components and authorizing the Navy to increase production of Virginia-class submarines to two a year beginning in 2010, two years ahead of the Navy's plan.
Senators have been reluctant in the past to support stepping up the production schedule for Virginia-class submarines unless the Navy was in favor of it.
