Iran-Russia 50 jet engines deal

During his visit to Iran, Russian President Vladimir Putin might have signed a $150 million deal to provide Iran with 50 RD-33-series turbofan engines, which power the widely exported Russian MiG-29 fighter jet.

The engines are reportedly intended for Iran's long-beleaguered Azarakhsh (Lightning) domestic fighter jets instead of The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF)'s MiG-29s -- and they could be just what the Azarakhsh program needs.

Of course, the IRIAF operates dozens of MiG-29s -- some acquired from Russia, some kindly flown to Iran by Saddam Hussein in the run-up to Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Iran is certainly in a position to need parts for them, including engines. But the prospect that the RD-33 engines will be allocated to the Azarakhsh program is worth some further examination.
