Italian defense planners are firming up a spending plan for 2008 that could launch the purchase of new submarines, frigates and combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) helicopters for the Air Force and new Chinooks for the Army.
Defense spending in 2008 could equal the five-year high of 2007 if the budget plan survives Treasury review, but an autumn scrap was under way in late September as Defense Minister Arturo Parisi countered demands for cuts from leftists in the government coalition.
This year’s defense spending totals 14.45 billion euros ($20.4 billion), 0.96 percent of GDP, plus 1.7 billion euros from the Industry Ministry for Italian gear. The top-up will be 1.55 billion euros in 2008 and 1.2 billion in 2009.
