The Navy says the submarine Ohio departs Bangor Saturday for its first deployment since a $1 billion conversion.Instead of carrying Trident nuclear missiles, the submarine carries 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles. It also can carry a 66-member special operation team that can leave and enter the sub under water through missile tubes.
The 560-foot sub is the first of four Trident submarines to be converted to carry cruise missiles. A second, the Michigan, also was converted at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and is in testing.
A third, the Florida, has been converted and is in testing at the King's Bay, Georgia, base where it will be joined later this year by the submarine Georgia.
