Multi-role combat aircraft deal: Does the mighty MiG stand a chance?

It comes from a proud pedigree, but hit hard times and is just recovering. Can the Mig-35 stand up to the powerful Americans and Europeans to bag the MRCA deal? Ashwin Tombat reports

India's biggest ever global defence tender for the purchase of 126 multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA) for $10 billion (Rs42,000 crore), now at the Request For Proposals (RFP) stage, has six main bidders.

The contenders are:
  • Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet
  • Dassault Rafale
  • Eurofighter Typhoon
  • Lockheed Martin F-16
  • RSK MiG-35
  • Saab Gripen
