Another set of ground testing has been recently completed by the U.S. defense contractor Aerojet for the Hypersonics Flight Demonstration program (HyFly).
The program, one of several ramjet/scramjet based programs supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has the ultimate goal of creating a Mach 6 cruise missile with a range of 1100km (690 mile) capable of launching from ships and submarines as well as U.S. aircraft.
The Hypersonics Flight Demonstration program (HyFly) is the first time a scramjet missile engine has been tested with conventional, liquid hydrocarbon fuel, which is non-toxic and safe to carry aboard ships. Ramjet may actually be regarded as the simplest form of a jet engine having no moving parts.
