FM spokeswoman: China firmly opposes US arms sales to Taiwan

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu says China firmly opposes United States arms sales to Taiwan.

The US recently announced the proposed sale of twelve P-3C anti-submarine patrol aircraft and spare parts which will enable the assembly of three such airplanes. The US has also proposed to sell Tawian 144 standard Type 2' Block 3A anti-aircraft missiles.

Jiang Yu said the sale would violate commitments made in the three Sino-US joint communiques, particularly the one signed between the two countries in August of 1982.

She said the US should stop arms sales and end its military links with Taiwan so as not to send the wrong message to pro-independence forces.
