Search-and-Rescue US101 Attracts Italian Interest

The US101 helicopter lost to the CH-47 Chinook in the recent U.S. Air Force Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) competition, but a version of it may perform that role for the Italian Air Force, which could buy 15 to 20 of the aircraft.

“The Italian military General Staff has approved a requirement for a large helicopter to be used by special forces and for CSAR in high-risk missions, and the Air Force believes the EH101 would be an ideal candidate,” said Maj. Gen. Paolo Magro, head of the Air Force’s Third Division, referring to the original name of the helicopter.

The helicopter could also be a vehicle for far-reaching changes in the organization of Air Force special forces and CSAR operations. The US101 marketed in the United States is built by AgustaWestland, Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter Textron, while the CH-47 is built by Boeing.
