Russian Decision to Resume Bomber Patrols Aimed at Reviving Clout

The Kremlin's decision to resume regular long-range bomber patrols appears to stem from a desire to challenge U.S. global dominance and restore its Cold War military power.

President Vladimir Putin announced the decision on Friday. He said the aircraft would have "a strategic character," a hint that they would carry nuclear weapons.

Putin voiced hope that "our partners" would react to the decision "with understanding."

Fourteen Russian Tu-160 and Tu-95MC bombers were reported to be flying over Atlantic and Pacific waters on Friday. The patrols were suspended in 1992, after the Soviet Union disintegrated.
