Austalian Navy's lack of sailors

The navy's front-line warships are under threat due to a chronic shortage of qualified engineers and warfare officers.

Sources said the situation was so dire that the number of principal warfare officers (PWO) on the navy's five guided missile frigates has been cut from four to one or two.

PWO numbers on the eight Anzac class frigates have in some cases fallen from three to one.

On some ships the shortage of engineers is so acute they are only under way for 12 out of every 24 hours. Shortfalls are also occurring with weapons electrical engineering officers.
