Alarm as Russians restart long-range bomber flights

Russia is resuming the Cold War-era practice of sending bomber aircraft on long-range flights beyond its borders, Vladimir Putin announced yesterday.

The Russian president said 14 strategic bombers had taken off simultaneously from airfields across the country. He insisted the move was required to deal with security threats.

"We have decided to restore flights by Russian strategic aviation on a permanent basis," Mr Putin told reporters after inspecting joint military exercises with China and four central Asian states in Russia's Ural mountains. "From today such patrols will be carried out on a regular basis. We hope our partners will treat this with understanding."
