Merkel to discuss armament contracts during Athens visit on July 20

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will discuss possible armament contracts with Greece during a one-day visit to Athens on July 20, officials at the Greek prime minister's office said Thursday.

According to officials, talks between Merkel and Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis will focus mainly on the possible procurement by Greece of Eurofighter jets but will also include other issues such European-Turkish relations, the Cyprus problem, the EU constitution and European Union expansion.

The Eurofighter Typhoon, previously called the Eurofighter 2000, is a multinational effort by European nations to produce a cutting edge fighter aircraft, co-produced by the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy.
