Venezuela Targets Eight Russian Submarines

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that he will discuss the purchase of eight Russian submarines when he meets President Vladimir Putin this week.

Chavez, in an interview broadcast late Sunday on Russian state network Channel One, said that the vessels were needed to protect Venezuela’s territorial waters from the U.S.

“Until recently, it was just a rumor that Venezuela plans to buy eight Russian submarines, but it is better to hear these things first-hand,’’ Chavez said in comments translated from Spanish into Russian. “This will be one of the topics we will discuss with President Putin.’’
