EADS delivers core electronics for next-generation air defence radar

Medium Extended Air Defence System (MEADS)EADS Defence & Security Systems will provide the tri-national Medium Extended Air Defence System (MEADS) with advanced electronics components which make the system's fire control radar the most powerful radar worldwide.

As reported by the company on Friday, under the contract worth approx. € 120 m EADS Defence Electronics (DE) besides other electronic equipment will develop and produce more than 40,000 transmit/receive (T/R) modules and related work packages to be delivered during the design and development phase up to 2009.

These modules are key elements of next-generation radars utilizing the so-called Active Electronically Scanning Array (AESA) technology. Instead of mechanical movement of the antenna AESA radars use electronical steering exerted by thousands of T/R modules, basically small radars itself which enable unprecedented performance and versatility.
