New U.K. warship could be the last

Type 45 DestroyerSteel-cutting has started on what defence experts fear could be the last of the Royal Navy's new destroyers.

A senior Ministry of Defence official fired up a powerful laser cutter at VT Shipbuilding yesterday, slicing through metal sheet to form a gun turret deck plate for HMS Duncan.

It was a ceremonial event, as workers at the company's huge sheds in Portsmouth naval base were already putting the finishing touches to the warship's long range radar mast.
