Navy prefers Zumwalt-based ship design
Congressional decisions on design options for the planned CG(X) missile cruiser could affect the size and capabilities of the Navy and the shipbuilding industrial base, according to a new report.
And, although the Navy has stated its preference for basing the new ship on the DDG 1000/DD(X) Zumwalt-class destroyer design, the report suggests lawmakers should make sure the Navy considers alternatives that could lower costs or offer different capabilities.
The Navy plans to order its first CG(X) in 2011, leading off an 18-ship class to replace the 22 CG-47 Ticonderoga-class Aegis cruisers now in service.
