Britain's two biggest warship builders have entered talks on a joint venture to combine their key construction and naval support businesses ahead of a rationalisation of the UK's shipbuilding industry.
BAe Systems employs 3500 workers at its Clyde yards, and the VT Group has 2700 at Portsmouth. They are already collaborating on orders for Type-45 air-defence destroyers and the Royal Navy's future aircraft carriers.
The two firms also tried to put together a joint bid in March for the Babcock International Group, the company that refits warships at Rosyth in Fife and is a prime support contractor at the Faslane submarine base on the Clyde. The takeover failed when Babcock's shares surged and made the deal "no longer a viable option", according to insiders.
