Australia ducks fighter secrets row

F-35 Lightning II (JSF)Australia has committed itself to the Joint Strike Fighter project, despite Britain threatening to pull out because of the United States' reluctance to share highly classified technical data for the plane.

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said that issues about Australia's access to secret codes for vital software for the F-35 Lightning multi-role aircraft had now been "tied down".

His spokesman said that Australia's access to sensitive technical data had always been a condition of signing a memorandum of understanding on the project. The agreement was due to be signed overnight in Washington.
