Portugal Buys Dutch Frigates

HNLMS Van NesThe Netherlands is selling two multipurpose frigates to Portugal. Defence State Secretary Cees van der Knaap has reached agreement with Portuguese Defence Minister Nuno Severiano Teixeira on the sale.

The frigate HMS Van Nes will be transferred to the Portuguese navy on 1 December 2008. HMS Van Galen, to be deployed from mid-December as part of the UNIFIL mission in and near Lebanon, will sail under the Portuguese flag from 1 November 2009.

The agreement was signed yesterday at the defence ministry in The Hague. The proceeds of the sale, about which no details were disclosed, will be used by the Netherlands for buying patrol vessels.
