India'sNavy banks on 'stealth' edge

Shivalik-class frigateWarfare is all about maximising the surprise element. With countries like the US inducting 'stealth'bombers and warships to evade enemy radars, the Indian Navy too is trying to turn "stealthy".

Though not in the same league as US and a few others, Indian naval designers say they have achieved a good-level of proficiency in designing warships with "very low" radar, infra-red, noise, frequency and magnetic "signatures" to beat enemy detection systems.

"The stealth features in three Shivalik-class frigates, being built at Mazagon Docks Ltd (MDL), will considerably reduce their radar cross-section. Advanced signature suppression and management features have been incorporated in them," said Commodore K N Vaidyanathan, principal director naval design.
