Indonesian navy chief hopes RI to have four submarines by 2008

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Slamet Soebijanto hoped Indonesia could get four new Russian-built submarines in 2008.

"If we can get the four submarines at a lower price, why don`t we try (to buy) them. However, the decison is not the Navy`s, but the Indonesian Government`s through the Defense Ministry and the Indonesian Military Headquarters. Moreover, we are already familiar with the Russian weaponry system," he said here on Friday.

Referring to military technology, he said that at the moment Indonesia should stop transferring its technology, but should start reversing the technology.

"Many countries has done this. Just follow suit, as developing military technology will take a long time," he said.
