Turkey is preparing to purchase 50 air-to-ground “smart missiles”, type SLAM-ER, from the United States (US).
The US Department of Defense, or Pentagon, asked for permission from Congress to sell the missiles used by F-16-type war planes.
A statement from the Pentagon said that the request from Turkey to buy missiles manufactured by Boeing was approved.
Officials estimate the total value of weapon systems, including equipment and services, at $162 million.
Requests from the Pentagon to Congress to grant permission for the transfer of arms to the allied nations are automatically approved if the Pentagon does not issue an objection within 15 days.
