Republic of Singapore Navy launches new frigate RSS Supreme

The Singapore Navy has launched its sixth frigate and the last in a series of five to be built locally.

Equipped with advanced sensor and weapon systems, they will complement and enhance the operational effectiveness of the Singapore armed forces.

RSS Supreme was christened on Tuesday by Mrs Ivy Ng, the wife of Manpower and Second Minister of Defence Ng Eng Hen.

The 114-metre long ship will have state-of-the-art combat capabilities aimed at dealing with three aspects of naval warfare - surface, air and underwater.

RSS Supreme is the last of a batch of six frigates for the Singapore Navy.

The first, RSS Formidable was designed and built by a French company and launched in January 2004.

Then came Intrepid, Steadfast, Tenacious and Stalwart and finally Supreme, all built locally.

The six new frigates will replace the Navy's Missile Gunboats, which have been in service for more than 25 years.
