The Indian Air Force, which desperately needs fighter aircraft, will start the long-delayed process for acquiring 126 multi-role jet fighters this month.
In the face of a rapidly growing charter, which includes several responsibilities, it faces an unprecedented number crunch in its fighter fleet.
Against a sanctioned strength of 39-and-a-half squadrons, the actual number is has now plummeted to 29. This has happened because of the scheduled decommissioning of the ageing MiG fleet.
"The trough would be approximately 29 squadrons. I don't think we'll see anything going below 29 squadrons," says Assistant Chief of Air Staff, Sumit Mukherjee.
The indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) was to replace the MiG-21 as the mainstay of the IAF. But with the LCA way behind schedule, the IAF has sought a lifeline through the import route.
