Aus: Seasprites chopper project troubled

A decade after the government signed up to buy the Seasprite helicopter, the troubled project remains three years away from being fully operational.

But the Department of Defence says it has no plans to abandon the project, which has so far cost $937 million.

"The project to acquire 11 Super Seasprites remains active, but has continued to experience difficulty in software development that has caused considerable delay," a defence spokesman said.

He said the project was expected to achieve initial operational capability in 2007.

Then the navy could expect to deploy Seasprites with most of their planned capabilities, while full operation was not expected until 2009.
