Japan, US agree to deploy X-band radar in Japan, share data

TOKYO, Oct 26 (KUNA) -- Japan and the US have agreed to deploy in Japan a new US early warning radar system for tracking and identifying ballistic missiles and to share the surveillance information, in an apparent move to accelerate bilateral cooperation in missile defense, media reported Wednesday.

The X-band radar system is likely to be deployed in an Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) base in northern Japan, according to Kyodo News Agency, citing government sources. The two sides are also in final-stage discussions on Japan's provision of data from its domestically developed FPS-XX ground-based, phased array radars to be deployed from fiscal 2008, the report said.

Washington has approached Tokyo during negotiations on the realignment of US forces in Japan regarding the deployment of the X-band radar system in Japan to detect and intercept ballistic missiles targeted at the US homeland, it said. The US plans to deploy the X-band radar system on the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, by the end of the year as part of the US missile defense shield.
