The South Korean Navy is said to have mobilized the full-fledged missile-detection capabilities of an Aegis-equipped warship after North Korea indicated a possible long-range rocket launch next month.A Navy official said Wednesday that to his knowledge, one of the Aegis Destroyers operating in the East Sea has been officially given the task of detecting a long-range rocket from the North.
The official said the SPY-1D radar, a multi-function phased-array radar, is already built into the Aegis weapons system, but extra maneuvering is needed in order for the Aegis fleets to detect a long-range ballistic missile.
