S. Korean Aegis Tasked with Detecting N. Korean Rocket

ROKS Sejong the Great (DDG_991)The South Korean Navy is said to have mobilized the full-fledged missile-detection capabilities of an Aegis-equipped warship after North Korea indicated a possible long-range rocket launch next month.

A Navy official said Wednesday that to his knowledge, one of the Aegis Destroyers operating in the East Sea has been officially given the task of detecting a long-range rocket from the North.

The official said the SPY-1D radar, a multi-function phased-array radar, is already built into the Aegis weapons system, but extra maneuvering is needed in order for the Aegis fleets to detect a long-range ballistic missile.
