As the Navy’s small-but-feisty Oliver Hazard Perry class of frigates sunsets this year, the last on the West Coast was retired Thursday in San Diego.
The Gary, a 30-year-old warship, was decommissioned in a ceremony that celebrated both the frigate’s (track) record in the fleet and the ship’s namesake, a World War II officer who received the Medal of Honor for saving hundreds of his crew mates.
