Australia to upgrade main air base in New South Wales

Australia's fleet of fighter planes will benefit from a 211-million-U.S. dollar redevelopment announced by the Australian government on Wednesday.

Much of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base at Williamtown, near Newcastle in New South Wales, will be demolished or renovated as the facility is upgraded in time for delivery of 58 F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters, beginning in late 2018.

Williamtown is home to over half Australia's fighter aircraft, as well as the Wedgetail Airborne and Early Warning and Control Fleet. It directly employs 3,000 military and commercial personnel.
