Crews battle fire on USS Gunston Hall for hours
Sailors and Portsmouth firefighters battled flames on the USS Gunston Hall for more than three hours Tuesday.
The fire started in an unmanned storeroom below the ship’s main deck and was noticed around 2 p.m., according to Lt. Michael A. Hatfield with Expeditionary Strike Group 2.
The ship’s in-port emergency fire team started to fight the fire immediately, and then the Portsmouth Fire Department was called in. Hatfield said the fire was put out just before 5:30 p.m.
