UK sends warship to Falklands

HMS Dragon (D35)Navy chiefs have sent HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer, to the South Atlantic after a deployment in Chile.

Last night naval sources said the move was part of the MoD’s effort to speed up the “operational drumbeat” by which the Navy keeps guard over the Falklands.

With Argentina attempting to lease 12 supersonic bombers from Russia, the MoD is also to install a new £200million air defence missile system in the islands.

  1. More hyperbole from the British media, more to sell newsprint than anything else.
    That said, recent actions by the UK government show that hopefully the lessons have been learned. The events that encouraged the Argentine government to invade the Falklands would it seems not be allowed to happen again.
    Argentina would need a lot more than a dozen aircraft to pose any credible threat, and with a Navy that rots alongside the jetty it will be many a year before they can even protect themselves,never mind invade someone else's territory.
    No matter what political speak emanates from other South American country's, the fact remains that Argentina is not the most popular country amongst its neighbours.
    Still it's good for the the UK armed forces, probably stops even more drastic cutbacks than has already taken place.
    As for Kirchner, she is washed up and ready for the scrap heap. It makes me laugh how someone with a European name, obviously descended from colonists can accuse others of being the same. I wonder just how many indigenous people are in positions of responsibility in that country.
