Navy to Recertify, Modernize Tomahawk Missiles in 2019

Block IV Tomahawk Land-Attack MissilesThe U.S. Navy’s arsenal of Block IV Tomahawk Land-Attack Missiles(TLAM) is due for a refurbishment beginning in 2019 as the missiles reach the end of their 15-year warranty. The Navy also will use the opportunity to modernize the weapons.

The Block IV Tomahawk entered service in 2014 with a 15-year life and the recertification by the missile’s manufacturer, Raytheon Missile Co., will renew the life of the missiles by another 15 years, Chris Daily, Raytheon’s Tomahawk deputy program manager, told reporters along with, Chris Sprinkle, the company’s senior program manager for Tomahawk, Jan. 13 at the Surface Navy Association Symposium in Arlington.

The TLAM is delivered in canisters and requires no field maintenance or preventable maintenance. All of its software is reprogrammable, Sprinkle said.
