Fire causes damage to C-17 plane at Wright-Patt

C-17 catches fire at WPAFBA C-17 Globemaster III plane may have had an engine malfunction that caused a tailpipe exhaust fire on the cargo jet Jan. 7, according to 445th Airlift Wing officials.

The fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to the aircraft, which will be off the flight line about two weeks for repairs, officials said.

The plane was being prepared to take off on a local training flight at about 5:30 p.m. with 11 crew members aboard. The fire reportedly occurred when the third engine started.
