Chang Ching, a researcher from the Society for Strategic Studies, an Republic of China think tank, said the full scale model of an aircraft carrier found in Central China may be used by the People's Liberation Army to test its future communication and radar systems, reports our sister newspaper, Want Daily on Jan. 30.
Chang said that the model of the aircraft carrier and Type 055 destroyers were both designed by the 701st Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation located in Hubei province's Wuhan.
They are more likely to serve educational purposes, more for research as opposed to military training facilities. He added that the flight deck of the model carrier is too weak for a carried-based fighter like the J-15 to conduct take-off and landing tests.
