USS Ford expected in 2016 but doubts remain

A year after her christening, an aircraft carrier named for President Gerald R. Ford remains on target for delivery to the Navy in March 2016, but also continues to carry a stigma of technological glitches, cost overruns and delays that have dogged the Pentagon's newest ship.

Late last month, the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a follow-up report on the USS Ford, saying while the Navy now expects the cost at delivery to remain at $12.9-billion, that may be for a ship still lacking some of the technological advances it was expected to include.

Adding those on later — out of financial reserves the Navy says it is setting aside — will increase the cost of a carrier which has already come under sharp criticism by some, including U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is expected to take Michigan Sen. Carl Levin's seat atop the Senate Armed Services Committee.
